Being an Explorer is all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are.
Alongside your new friends, you’ll master the skills that will make you feel stronger and happier in the long run, and try things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.
Whether you’re hiking to faraway lands or building a robot in your local town hall, you’ll have the freedom to choose what you’d like to do, and work together with adults to make it happen.
Explorers take part in the flag ceremony at the beginning and end of meetings, but will spend the evenings undertaking their own activities such as badge work; completing their Young Leader Training Modules, off-site activities, and DofE check-ins.. They will also go on camps, both as a Unit, and part of the group Summer Camps

Absolutely. If taking the lead sounds like something you’d like to try for yourself, sign up for the Explorer Scout Young Leader’s Scheme to get some hands-on experience volunteering with the younger Scout sections.
Whilst in Explorers, you can earn:
a Joining In Award
a Moving On Award
Activity Badges
Challenge Awards
a Top Award
a Membership Award

Whilst in Explorers, you can work towards your Duke of Edinburgh award. At 19th Hendon, we operate a Duke of Edinburgh Award Centre, our Explorers register through us, and we facilitate their Volunteering requirement through having them join the leadership teams at younger sections of the group. Once they have completed their three programmes; skill, volunteering, physical, we run an expedition for them to complete the final requirement of their award. We have successfully ran two Bronze and a Silver expeditions for our Explorers, as well as a Gold expedition, where four of our leaders, all of whom have come through the group as children, completed a four day hike to complete their Gold DofE.

The Explorers is run by their own committee, who take the lead on planning camps, activities, running the tuck shop, and contributing to the programme. They are vital parts of the section, and often make up part of leadership teams across the group. They are voted into their roles by their peers and will hold their position until they leave Explorers.
